Backhaven - Spatial Installations & Computational Design

Founded by Edward Park, Architect AIBC, Backhaven provides computational design, creative direction, and spatial art consulting.
We partner with artists, architecture practices, and fabricators to turn complex spatial concepts into physical reality.

Design is an ever-shifting spectrum. The interesting work lives in the friction between a bold concept and the physical world it has to survive in.
Backhaven operates at that edge, where spatial vision meets computational craft - creating meaningful spatial environments, objects, and experiences.

	ARRAY

Type: Audiovisual Laser Movement InstallationMedium: Rhino + Grasshopper
Material:

3-Lasers, 96 Phospherscent UV Reactive Screens, 4xPAs, Movement

Year: 2025

The Concept

ARRAY explores dimensionality to contemplate the layers of our existence, revealing the abstraction between our physical and non-physical realities.

Multiple laser projections are generated in real time from body joint tracking data captured during a trio choreographic score, composed of geometric, rotational arm sequences and morphing poses. ARRAY translates this movement data into evolving patterns, oscillating forms, and abstract geometries that emulate different dimensional planes by integrating precise and randomly generated visualization models derived from intra- and inter-body connections.

Developed collaboratively with the Interim collective, the project was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Computation

Mapping dynamic light onto a fragmented physical volume requires absolute spatial calibration. The physical installation relies on an array of 96 semi-transparent screen panels suspended in a three-dimensional matrix. Each panel represents a specific joint from a set pose in the choreographic score. Rhino and Grasshopper were utilized to generate the exact spatial coordinates for the rigging system and to build a digital twin for pre-visualization.
To activate this static structure, live motion capture data was routed through TouchDesigner. This system acted as the brain of the installation, translating human movement into the laser control software to drive three synchronized lasers in real time.
A selection of the screens are coated with a thin layer of phosphorescent, UV-reactive paint. This material application allows the physical surfaces to temporarily capture the mapped laser light, holding ephemeral traces of the digital choreography that slowly fade as the sequence progresses.
